Atrioventricular (AV) blocks may not be commonly encountered in patient care. Breaking down the components of the different blocks is valuable to interpret the various AV blocks. The terms AV Block and Heart Block are synonymous. AV Block is the most current and most correct term, but you may still hear “Heart Block” used in clinical practice.

First degree AV block does not generally cause any symptoms, but may progress to more severe forms of heart block such as second- and third-degree atrioventricular block. It is diagnosed using an electrocardiogram , and is defined as a PR interval greater than 200 milliseconds. [1] Atrioventricular (AV) block can be described by degree (based on ECG appearance) or by anatomic level of block. The degree of AV block or anatomic level of block does not necessarily correlate with the severity of subsequent symptoms.

Atrioventricular (AV) block is partial or complete interruption of impulse transmission from the atria to the ventricles. The most common cause is idiopathic fibrosis and sclerosis of the conduction system. Diagnosis is by electrocardiography; symptoms and treatment depend on degree of block, but treatment, when necessary, usually involves pacing.
